Season

    • The trench was opened in the southern stretch of the northern sector of vicolo del Fauno, between _insulae_ VI 9 and VI 11. The excavated area corresponds to the stretch of road between the House of the Dioscuri (VI 9, 6-9) and the House of the Labyrinth (VI 11, 9-10). The road, together with the extended vicolo della Fullonica, was already investigated during the excavation campaigns of 2004-2006, and in the _Regio_ VI constitutes one of the two roads that did not have stone paving. The excavation identified five levels of beaten earth surfaces, datable to between the 3rd century B.C. and the 1st century A.D. The functional continuity and the presence in some of these surfaces of cart tracks identified them as road surfaces. The beaten surfaces relating to the Hellenistic phases of the road were severely damaged by a series of pits, used mainly as middens. The large quantity of material recovered from the latter provided the _terminus ante quem_ for the dating of the surfaces. Furthermore, below the Hellenistic road levels was another occupation level resting directly on sterile terrain. Cut by many pits, which had compromised its preservation, this level constituted mainly of cinerite, produced only pottery of the archaic period. The analysis of the stratigraphic relationship between the road-bed and the sidewalk clarified their chronology, highlighting the fact that the two kerbs were built in different periods, in relation to the houses to which they belonged. The eastern kerb, relating to the House of the Labyrinth, was built in the late Republican period and continued in use with the successive Imperial levels. The western kerb, a sort of podium made up of high limestone blocks, was built in the early Imperial period and joined the road to the House of the Dioscuri through a doorway, which was probably blocked in the post-earthquake period.
