Chronology

  • 400 BC - 79 AD

Season

    • The northern stretch of the vicus di Modesto, between _insulae_ 2 and 5 of the Regio VI was excavated in 2005 and 2006. The excavations involved the sidewalk/pavement in front of a number of houses studied as part of the same project (domus VI, 5, 4 e VI 5, 5-6, 21, House of the Grand Duke Michael). At present the road has a basalt paved surface and is bordered by sidewalks along its entire length. The excavations revealed that the remaking of various tracts of sidewalk relating to individual domus followed the architectural evolution of the _domus_ themselves. Trench A in particular, excavated in the sidewalk in front of the western perimeter wall of the House of the Grand Duke Michael (VI 5, 5-6, 21), revealed several phases of the sidewalk, contemporary with those of the _domus_, built between the end of the 3rd century B.C. and the 1st century A.D. The sidewalk was built during the first construction phase of the house. To the north in that period there was an empty lot, on which _domus_ VI, 5, 4, would be built in the mid 2nd century B.C. The sidewalk which ran in front of _domus_ VI 5,5 must have terminated in correspondence with the boundary between the house and the empty lot to the north. This was shown by the impression left by the kerb of the first phase sidewalk on the beaten road surface found in the lower levels. It should be noted that this surface was cut by the foundation trench of the façade of the house and therefore predated the construction of the house itself.
