The Cucuteni A3 settlement at Ruginoasa "Dealul Drăghici", Iaşi county, is situated on a hill (300 m high), 1.5 km west from the railway station. H. Dumitrescu started excavating here in 1926. Rescue excavations started in 2001. We identified two houses (aboveground), three sunken-floored houses and two defensive trenches. The aboveground houses have a special architecture and construction system. They have a stone border in which wooden sticks were fixed. This system is known only at Ruginoasa settlement. House 3 has three construction phases, with several phases. Fireplaces prevail inside the buildings. Areas reserved for household activities were identified inside. Sunken-floored houses represent another specific feature of the Ruginoasa site. The defense system consists in a trench excavated in the local geological structure that reaches the sand base. The trench is paved with big stone slabs. Such a situation is known from the Cucuteni "Cetăţuia" site. The overview indicates two defense trenches, a fact that requires further research. Until now, in the area that we excavated, from a stratigraphical point of view, the earliest archaeological complex is the defense trench (we identified one main trench and a second one, near it). A sunken-floored house level follows, the next level contains aboveground houses while the last level has few archaeological material. The finds include pottery and different other artifacts made of flint, stone, horn, bones, clay, and copper. We found a large number of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic statuettes. Several special sherds with zoomorphic representations and the large number of zoomorphic statues indicate religious practices involving an animal.
