Chronology

Season

    • Between the 5th of July and 7th of August 2004 the fourth excavations campaign was conducted in the Costişa-Komarov type cemetery at Adâncata. Two tumuli bearing the codes T8 and T9/2004 were excavated. T8/2004. The mound is located about 300 m to the north-east of the tumuli excavated in the previous years (2001 - 2003) on the left side of the Adâncata-Feteşti communal road, close to Feteşti forest. This tumulus has a 20 m diametre and is 0.50 m high. Two sections were drawn to identify the central grave : S.I to the NE and S.I. to the SE, both oriented to the north-south, measuring 5 m in length and 3 m in width. In the centre of the tumulus the grave pit was identified 0.80 m deep. The human skeleton uncovered was relatively well preserved, lying on the bottom of the pit, but lacking artifacts. The deceased was laid in a crouching position on the left side. The wrap of this tumulus underwent pedological and geological tests.T9/2004. The small-sized mound is located 20 m west of T8/2004. It has a 12 m diameter and 0.4 m in height. We uncovered two pits of an approximate rectangular shape, oriented to the NE-SW long axis, 0.65 m deep. One of the pits (marked M1) is a cremation one, with an arrow tip with a concave base, the other one bears poorly preserved osteological material which results in failure to identify the burial rite. The only artifact from this pit is a battle basalt axe. In the wrap of the two tumuli we uncovered archaeological material belonging to the Costişa-Komarov and Cucuteni cultures. The Bronze Age pottery is fragmentary, characterized by a fabric comprising crushed flint/silicolite and rough sand used as degreaser.
