Chronology

  • 1 AD - 500 AD

Season

    • The systematic control of all excavation work carried out as part of the project for the construction of the Alta Capacità railway between Turin and Milan led to the identification of an extensive archaeological site on the Novara-Milan section. This was divided into three sectors and stratigraphically excavated. In the central section 1 and the western section 2, the plans of two rectangular buildings were identified. Section 3, to the east presented isolated structures, sometimes joined by drainage levels, and a series of post-holes. A preliminary interpretation suggests that this was a rural complex of Roman date, continuously occupied, during which it underwent several structural alterations, between the 1st and the 5th century A.D. The coins and pottery recovered from the site fit within this chronology. A late Roman burial was also found, containing interesting grave goods (a glass drinking vessel; serpent-head bracelets and earrings with multi-faceted terminals) datable to between the second half of the 4th and the 5th century A.D. (Laura Simone Zopfi, Mariagrazia La Spada)
