Chronology

Season

    • The surveys aimed at integrating the shrine into an urban context. One can notice the north border of the ancient city and a first east-west road, decumanus. In the east part there is a cardo. The next row of insulae can be found between the decumanus mentioned and the second decumanus, flanking the shrine to the north. A building with a central courtyard can be distinguished there. Liber Pater's shrine can be found in the third row of insulae, starting from the north wall of the precincts. To the north of the shrine we uncovered the precinct wall of the sacred area (temenos), delimiting the sacred area to the west; a very well preserved Mithraeum adjoins the north wall of the shrine. A few areas in Partoş (the current district overlapping the former Roman city) sank in time, and then an "alluvial mantle" covered them during the recent period, and blurred the forms of relief, while under it the ancient monuments were preserved very well. During the first phase the walls of the shrine were made of beams and adobe. During the second phase, dating to Severus Alexander, the walls were laid on a gravel foundation and a stone base, overlapped by the adobe elevation. A part of the earlier beams were incorporated into the new building that has exactly the same plan as the first one. The last phase is represented by a few wooden and adobe walls on a stone foundation, with a slightly different orientation as compared with the earlier walls. The last phase of the shrine is dated by means of coins from Philippus Arabus. The building was devastated by the first Christians. The main find is a row of favissae (ritual pits, where periodically offerings were brought to the shrine), on the bottom of which there were a lot of pots broken on the spot.
