Chronology

Season

    • The Calvinist Church of Ákos is among the best preserved Romanesque monuments of Transylvania, belonging to a dissolute monastery. The archaeological research started in 1998 in order to identify the building phases and the disappeared elements of the monastic complex and until 2005 five research campaigns were carried out. During these campaigns the foundations of a chapel was identified on the north-east corner of the former abbey church. In addition, a trench surrounding the medieval complex was excavated and 76 burials were identified in the excavated area. Three trenches were opened on the south and north sides of the abbey church, during the 2005 campaign. The foundation of the semicircular sanctuary of the chapel was identified and a big pit for lime in the northern part of the chapel. The stratigraphy dated the desertion and demolition of the chapel in the 16th century. The sections S14 and S15 were opened in the south-east and north-east parts of the church, at the place of a projected water collector. A part of the surrounding trench and five tombs were identified there. The tombs can be grouped in two horizons: the medieval tombs, from the 12th to the 16th centuries and the tombs belonging to the priest families, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. In tomb M76 the skull bears the remains of a head-dress, a common piece of female costumes in the 18th century.
