Chronology

  • 300 AD - 1800 AD

Season

    • The excavations begun in 2003 and finished in 2005 uncovered the remains of a small sepulchral cult site. This comprised an inhumation burial within an earth grave dated to between the end of the 8th and beginning of the 9th century (C14 dating). The burial, on an east-west alignment was inserted inside a wooden structure attested by the presence of post-holes. The partial remains of another inhumation burial, on a different alignment, but of the same date indicate that a small cemetery was sited here, not to be identified with the Pieve di San Floriano. This was probably a private funerary oratory, similar to those found in Switzerland and the Trentino region. In the 13th century the first masonry built rectangular church was constructed which incorporated, exactly in the centre, the early medieval burials. The paving was renewed several times during the 14th and 15th centuries, whilst general restructuring of the walls was undertaken between the 18th and 19th centuries. (Aurora Cagnana, Paola Greppi)
