Chronology

  • 575 BC - 300 BC

Season

    • Situated in a strategic position along the river Ofanto, the necropolis was able to make use of several roads which linked it to Daunia and the Adriatic, the Tyrrhenian coast, the Ionian coast and the area around Matera. In fact, the typological and decorative complexity of the materials in the tomb groups reflect the cultural influences concentrated in the Melfi area, which may be defined a borderland zone. The research aimed to bring to the notice of the scholarly community the richness and variety of these tomb groups, in which evidence for contacts with Daunia, Campania, northern Lucania and the Greek colonies is clearly visible. The funerary artefacts can be dated to between the end of the 7th-beginning of the 6th century and the first half of the 4th century B.C., thus constituting a significant collection of data which demonstrates continuity between the mid 5th and the mid 4th century B.C., a period for which there is little archaeological evidence in northern Basilicata. Stratigraphic analyses made it possible to formulate a number of hypotheses regarding the diverse social groups represented within the nucleus of tombs.
