Season

    • The 2007 campaign aimed to investigate the structures that had emerged during a rescue excavation in 2006 undertaken by the Archaeological Superintendency of Apulia. This was undertaken following agricultural work which had damaged the archaeological levels, bringing to light a quantity of Iron Age material. A survey was also undertaken in the area aimed towards the creation of an Archaeological Map of the municipality of Cisternino. The archaeological area extended over a plateau of circa 1.2 ha. the surface characterised by the presence of numerous ancient remains. The plateau is delimited to the north by a substantial dry-stone terracing wall, following the line of the ancient fortification. It is situated in one of Apulia’s most beautiful landscapes, within a centuries-old olive grove a short distance away from the Adriatic sea. The excavation concentrated on an 8th century B.C. hut, identified in 2006 thanks to the baked clay cooking structures and post holes. The excavation uncovered the destruction layers of the hut, the occupation levels and connected structures. A large amount of pottery, faunal and botanical remains were recovered. Fragments of late geometric Corinthian vases were also found in association with Iapigian geometric pottery A stretch of the defensive wall came to light in the area adjacent to the hut. Datable to the 8th century B.C. this is a rare element as regards research in this part of Apulia and thus a find of great importance. The wall was built with irregular stone blocks and was interrupted at a point corresponding to one of the gates leading onto the upper part of the plateau. The contexts which emerged are of great significance for southern Italian archaeology, given the substantial lack of iron Age settlements to have been systematically investigated.
