A multidiscipline study was carried out in order to reconstruct the oscillations of Lake Martignano and their influence on the anthropological presence in the area. The data produced by a campaign of geomorphological and surface surveys, and of the data resulting from previous geomorphological, bathymetric, stratigraphic, mineralogical, archaeological and dendrochronological research was analysed by the environmental Department at ENEA, the department of Earth Science and Physics and the Institute of Human Palaeontology at Rome’s “La Sapienze” University and the Archeological Superintendency for South Etruria. The results rendered it possible to associate the traces of nine terraced surfaces identified during the research, seven of which emerged and two submerged, with the archaeological remains, and to place dating “limits” on the forms and recognise the multi-cyclic nature of the terraces.
