The excavation in the locality of Poggio Amore, Cinigiano (GR), is part of “The Roman Peasant Project”, developed by Pennsylvania and Cambridge universities. The site is situated close to that of San Martino, excavated as part of this project in 2010. As part of the project it was decided to excavate Poggio Amore which is similar in size and type of surface finds to San Martino. Although badly preserved, the site produced a coherent pottery sample including sigillata Italica, table, storage and cooking coarse wares and an example of a Dressel 2/4 amphora. Both the stratigraphy and pottery showed the site to have been a single-phased settlement dating to within the Julio-Claudian period. Despite the state of preservation, it was possible to make suggestions about the functioning of the site, in particular if compared to San Martino, which shares the same landscape and small size. Although smaller than San Martino, it is thought that the structure at Poggio dell’Amore had a tile roof, while a straw roof is suggested for San Martino. As at San Martino, the small amount of pottery and animal mains suggests that the dwelling was not inhabited continuously, rather it was occupied seasonally. However, although patchy, the finds at Poggio dell’Amore seemed slightly richer than those from San Martino, thanks to the presence of 11 glass fragments, from well-made vessels, and the presence of a larger amount of fine ware.
