The watching brief on the reorganisation of the piazza in front of the castle of “Malconsiglio”, identified two occupation phases of Greek and early medieval date, confirming and adding to the results of the interventions in 2006-2007. The earliest phase on the site was documented by the remains of an archaic dwelling and a necropolis, the tombs, including three earth graves and an enchytrismos, attesting its long use. A rock-cut ditch on an east-west alignment, running along the front of the building, and a forepart with a tower date to various construction phases. This structure was characterised by its very solid masonry, built of cobbles and large stones bonded with abundant cement mortar and had a quadrangular tower at its eastern end. Very interestingly, these structures can be seen as ruins in a number of photographs dating to the beginning of last century. The construction site relating to the castle was identified in the area north of the piazza, characterised by numerous holes filled at the moment it went out of use with large quantities of pottery fragments and food remains. Numerous coins, a seal ring, and some imported pottery were among the material found in the layers obliterating the ditch and holes on the construction site.
