Season

    • Between 2009 and 2014, the Roman Peasant Project has investigated eight rural Roman settlements identified during surface surveys in the territory of Ciningnano (GR). The settlements were of a variety of typologies: seasonal site, small and medium sized farm, site for the processing of agricultural products, large rural settlement and village. In 2014, the site of Tombarelle, originally interpreted as a small village based on the survey finds, was partially excavated. Although the excavation did not investigate the main scatter of pottery and building materials (probably relating to the largest settlement nucleus), it shed light on the long and intermittent occupation of the context, formed by at least three phases: late 1st century B.C. – first decades of the 1st century A.D., 5th century A.D. and late 10th – 12th century A.D. Based on the data collected thus far, the Roman and late antique site can be interpreted as a farm with associated functional and production structures. Between the late 1st century B.C. and the first decades of the following century, roof tiles and coarse ware pottery were produced at Tombarelle, while some over-fired materials suggest the production of red slipped pottery during the 5th century A.D. The surface finds indicate that the site was reoccupied during the middle centuries of the medieval period. This data, was confirmed, at least in part, by the excavation that showed the presence of medieval stratigraphies attributable to the reuse of the Roman cistern situated on the highest part of the site.
