Summary (English)

  • In 2005 we conducted archaeological excavations in the Paleolithic settlement of Lapoş – Poiana Roman. The works focused on the south-west part, at the border of the forest and straight to the right of the old road leading to Valea Unghiului. The stratigraphical observations, made in previous years, are confirmed also in this section. Unfortunately, also this section confirms the disturbance of the upper layer, due to agricultural works. The lithic complex uncovered is characterized by the initial phases of lithic exploitation, that is by bringing into the site raw matter blocks, their processing, in order to extract those supports directing the discharge. The categories of noticeable supports include chips, in proportion of 78.27%, followed by blades (15.41%), small blades (2.90%), rock fragments (0.50%) and nuclei (0.90%). Their desertion might be explained by the occurrence of accidents taken place during the discharge or of some impurities inside the raw matter block, that make it impossible to continue discharging under optimal conditions. The raw matter used the prevails is opal (8.19%), followed by sandstone (1.20%), flint (0.50%), and menilite/calcedony (0.10%). The density of the lithic material is very low all down to the average depth of 0.48 m from the section. The only squares with a higher occurrence of the pieces are A2 and B2, separated by a baulk of 0.50 m. The highest number of pieces was found in A2 at -0.32 m. The low density of the lithic material can indicate the proximity of the north border of the settlement.
