Summary (English)

  • Between 2002 and 2005 archaeological investigations on the site of a rural settlement of Roman date that is subject to quarrying have uncovered the remains of a building and related features. The area, centred on the course of the river Panaro and within the centuriation around Modena, was identified in 1979 and was placed under a restriction order in the territorial planning instruments (PTCP, PTCPR) and in the PIAE (Inter-regional plan for quarrying activities).

The building, which is still being excavated, occupies an area of circa 3500 m2 and preserves traces of the brick and/or cobble foundations that were damaged by agricultural activity. The complex was built in the Republican period and was in use during the Imperial era. The related features comprised two wells for the provision of water and, to the south of these, an oval kiln, with a central draught for the production of bricks and/or pottery. The wells are at a distance of 3 km from each other and were used in chronological order.

Near the building were two necropoli situated in separate areas: a first nucleus with two groups of 3-4 overlying cremation burials and an isolated inhumation was situated near a cart track. The second nucleus, of later date, also formed by two groups, comprised circa 20 burials in brick tombs and earth graves and only two cremations.
