Summary (English)

  • In October 1998 a stretch of road cutting came to light during the excavation of a series of test-pits as part of the “Torrenova Città Parco” project. It is situated to the east of the modern road, in an area adjacent to the “Sbardella” sports centre, at a depth of circa 1.55m below ground level. The cut, made in the tufa bed-rock for the construction of a road, has a maximumu width of 8.10m and cuts into the tufa to a depth of 1.30m. The cut has been excavated for a length of 0.80m. The road is aligned on a N-S axis. In the western part, at 1.00m below the edge, a small structure in pozzolana mortar and yellow tufa chips came to light. This may be interpreted as a footing; it is 0.30m wide and is levelled at circa 0.10m from the surface of the tufa. Immediately to the east were large fragments of leucitic lava bedded directly on the tufa, probably traces of the original paving. This find can be identified with the already known and published ancient road. (Stefano Musco, Patrizia Campagna, Sergio Fontana)
