ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS NEAR SOZOPOL (Petar Leshtakov – junior_1_bg@yahoo.com, Dimitar Nedev) The site is situated to the east of the Late Neolithic settlement explored in 2007. The explored area was c. 0.1 ha. Thirteen partly or entirely preserved trenches were registered. They are oriented east – west and their length is from 2 to 36 m. The trenches are 45 – 80 cm in width and 20 – 40 cm in depth. They are arranged parallel to each other and the distance between them is from 45 cm to 1.20 m. The trenches are filled with sand and a small quantity of sherds of ancient pottery. The trenches find parallels with similar sites in England and Italy, which are interpreted as vineyards of the Roman period. An ellipsoid pit, 78 cm by 83 cm in diameter and 22 cm in depth, was discovered. Its wall is plastered with clay, 3 – 4 cm in thickness, and is well fired in its upper part. Fragments of burned clay plaster, charcoal and sherds of the Late Neolithic period (second half of the 6th millennium BC) were found in the pit. The pit could be interpreted as a storage pit for grain, similarly to two other pits explored in a neighboring site.
