Summary

  • In the framework of the Archaeology of the Basilicata mountain landscapes project, a territory of 1.7 sq km in the Lucanian Apennines (northern slopes of Mount Volturino) was intensively explored in 2013 and 2014 to shed light on the ancient rural organization of this mountain area.

Survey Method

  • A team composed by four filed walkers (one team leader and three students) spaced ten meters apart (in good visibility conditions) or five meters apart (in bad visibility conditions) walked in parallel lines each field unit. Whenever the team identified a significant surface concentration of archaeological material (namely, “Unità Topografica – UT”) a quadrant grid was superimposed for systematic data recording and full material collection. In total nine material scatters were identified (mostly dated to the 4th and 3rd century BC), mapped in the field by means of GPS positioning systems, and integrated through the GIS platform. Following the field campaign a geophysical survey was also carried out to shed light on possible buried evidence.
