    Summary (English)

    • The 2019, 2021-2024 campaigns at San Gaetano di Vada concentrated on the south-eastern area of the port settlement, in trenches CXI and from 2021, CXIII. In trench CXI work continued in rooms 10, 11 and 12 of building M (fig. 1, fig. 2), built between the late 2nd and the 3rd century A.D. and probably in use until the late antique period. The three rooms constitute a reception complex, suggested on the base of the plan and decoration. In fact, room 12 was a large circular room with marble slabs on the floor and walls, which led into a small horseshoe-shaped room (room 11), also decorated with marble (fig. 3). The small room 10 was entered from the side of room 11, and was probably associated with the activities that took place in the two main rooms.
Excavations took place in trench CXIII (fig. 4) from 2021 onwards revealing a complex formed by a large pool with traces of decoration in marble slabs, which was probably a public fountain (fig. 5), to the west of which was a substantial foundation in mortar and cobblestones, interpreted as the base of a cistern. Immediately north, in 2022 the excavation of a large rectangular building began, whose internal divisions suggest it was a horreum, probably built of various materials. The area was used in the late antique period as a necropolis, with numerous earth graves, a cappuccina burials and burials in amphorae.
