Summary (English)

  • The archaeological excavations presented in this report are the archaeological rescue excavation carried out in the summer of 2004, at Alba Iulia, Clujului Street. Pottery, adobe and animal bone remains were discovered in an isolated pit. According to the composition of the fabric, the shape and decoration of the pottery, we can date it to the Petreşti culture. We found fragments of keel-shaped bowls, as well as sherds and tureens. The painted sherds are specific of the Petreşti culture; phase A-B, thus allowing us to definitely ascribe this complex to the above-mentioned culture. The recording of new finds belonging to the Petreşti culture in the researched geographical area completes the previously known data concerning the civilization created by the bearers of this culture, along with the latest research undertaken at representative sites, such as the one at Alba Iulia – Lumea Nouă. We carried out a topographic survey in order to obtain the necessary data. We also conducted magnetometric prospecting to obtain a diagnosis and, after processing the data (using specialized software), we managed to draw a magnetometric map. The magnetometric investigations showed that there were water and gas pipes in both areas, thus substantially reducing the area to be excavated. Moreover, we detected a series of magnetic anomalies, which could be interpreted as being of archaeological interest. Taking into account the magnetometric data, several stratigraphical surveys were conducted at different locations.
