During the progressive restoration of the town walls of ancient Allifae two excavations were undertaken on the internal sides of the south-western and north-eastern stretches of the circuit. Both uncovered medieval structures abutting the walls, with relative occupation levels which were dated by the pottery found within.

On the north side three foundations of cement conglomerate were uncovered. Placed at regular intervals they functioned as reinforcements and supports for the arches of an overhead aqueduct, the conduit of which was clearly visible on top of the walls. On the basis of what was observed in the stratigraphy this installation was probably not much later than the construction of the walls, for whose dating (Sullan or Triumvirate period) we have little data. During preliminary investigation prior to construction work a complex stratigraphic sequence with Imperial structures was uncovered inside the urban fortification, near the Porta Piedimonte. Walls generically datable to the medieval period had been built on top of these structures. The lack of safety requirements made it impossible to undertake the complete investigation of the area as hoped.
