Summary (English)

  • In the locality of Casanova archaeological investigations were undertaken during work on the restoration of the 17th century chapel of the sanctuary of Maria Santissima Grande ed Eccelsa, known as the Gran Gelsa.

The site is known for the presence of an imposing cryptoporticus in opus incertum, of splendid polygonal walls and other remains attributable to a villa rustica. Immediately below the church floor the remains of an earlier medieval structure were revealed together with the back walls of the cryptoporticus. Despite the lack of dating material the discoveries once again show this to be one of the most interesting and complex sites in the area of Carinola, which antiquity was part of the ager Falernus.
