    Summary (English)

    • In the modern city of Durrës (ancient Dyrrachium), close by the place where the mosaic of a Hippocampus and the statue of Nero were found, the remains of some ancient ruins were discovered at the square on the side of A. Naçi street. These structures have two phases of construction. The room A, B, C, D, relates to the first phase of construction while the room E and a foundation wall line belong to the second phase of construction.
The walls of the first phase are of rectangular shape, 0, 25 – 1, 10 m high and 0, 42 – 0, 50 m. wide. The foundation is built up with stones and mortar while the walls are of tiles bounded with an earth mortar. This building technique was widely used during the Hellenistic period.
Room A is paved with tiles and it has a multi coloured mosaic at the centre. The mosaic emblem has the shape of a 12 petal rosette flower surrounded by a circle of red tessera. Inside the room were found some coloured frescos with a yellowish brown background painted with floral motives. This is similar with the third Pompeian style dated to the first century B.C.
The pottery is infrequent, represented by some fragments of the eastern sigillata type B and local cooking pots.
Room E, on the eastern side and the foundation wall line that intervenes above the mosaic wall lines belong to the second phase of construction. The preliminary results of the excavation show the presence of a first century B.C. structure built within an insula of the city. Inside this building was a room (maybe a pool), decorated with mosaic and frescos. These structures were intensively used during the first century A.D and abandoned at the end of the 4-th century A.D. A third phase of activity suggests that it was temporally used at the time.
