Summary (English)
Cleaning was carried out of the leucitic tufa bedrock on the early Paleolithic site situated on the slopes of the ancient volcano of Roccamonfina. The volcano is well known even outside scientific circles as the site where footprints were found, news that was published in 2003 by the prestigious journal “Nature”.
Research initially concentrated on one of the three tracks already identified, track C. Its consistency and continuity was ascertained, despite the damage caused by the continual passage of walkers during the last two hundred years. The discovery of a new track was of great importance. This was the sixth and headed to the west, that is towards the volcano. To date all the tracks found led away from the volcano, towards the east. Further lengths of all the tracks were found, thus the area with finds was extended to over 100 linear metres, and the original number of fifty-six identifiable footprints attributable to Homo heidelbergensis increased to over one hundred.
