Summary (English)
Three trial trenches were dug east of the site of the ex shooting-range at Bagnaria Arsa (UD) where in 1990 eleven Lombard tombs emerged. A previous geo-magnetic survey undertaken in February by members of the “Roemisch-germanische Kommission” of Frankfurt am Main together with Hamburg University indicated the possible presence of walled structures, connected with the Lombard necropolis, which may have belonged to a church.
However, no walls were revealed by the trial trenches dug in the area, which brought to light only a burial. It is probable that outcrops in the natural gravel substrata alternating with layers having a sandy-silt matrix, more or less extensive and more or less compact, led to the interpretation of such anomalies as walled structures.
The skeleton was badly preserved due to disturbance from modern agricultural activities. All that remained were some fragments of the cranium, part of the upper and lower jaw, the right humerus and radius and the right side of the pelvis. The burial was on a WSW-ENE alignment (head to the west), slightly displaced compared to those found in 1990 that were on a precise W-E alignment. No cut for insertion into the gravel substrata was visible and the grave was not bordered with stones, nor were any grave goods present.
On instruction from the local Superintendency the skeleton was left in its place until the investigations recommence as part of operations relating to the construction of a third lane of the motorway which passes in the immediate vicinity.
