Summary (English)

  • EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF HOTNITSA (Stefan Chohadzhiev – s_choha@abv.bg, Alexander Chohadzhiev, Peter Leshtakov) An area of 114 sq. m of the Late Neolithic (second half of the 6th – beginning of the 5th millennia BC) settlement was explored. Part of a house, 5 m in width and at least 8 m in length, oriented northwest – southeast, was discovered. The house is divided in two rooms by a clay wall built along its longer axis. Several fragmentary vessels and the foundation of an oven with two stages of construction were discovered in the western part of the house. A “domestic altar”, constructed of clay and measuring 75 cm by 85 cm by 20 cm, was explored in the eastern part of the house. A layer, 60 cm in thickness and without archaeological material, lies under the house and the continental terrain is situated below it. A ritual pit with ellipsoid layout, 2.10 m by 1.90 m, and 2.55 m in depth was explored. Postholes, 5 – 12 cm in diameter, are situated on its periphery. Two fragmentary ceramic vessels and a fragment of an ox horn were found on the bottom of the pit. Bone tools and sherds were also found within the pit. Presumably, two strata exist in that part of the settlement, the lower one without archaeological structures yet discovered. In fact, this is the periphery of the settlement, which covered several dozens ha. The pottery includes conical dishes, biconical bowls, vessels with prolonged neck, etc. The decoration is in relief (barbotino), incised and with cannelures. Fragmentary small cult tables were found. The total number of the artifacts is 1419, 95 % of which are flint. The flint assemblage includes 1384 items: 3.7 % cores, 14.3 % fragmentary and intact plates, 64.4 % fragmentary and intact chips, 17.6 % tools. The tools include scrappers, microliths, blades, punches, retouched plates, etc.
