    Summary (English)

    • The archaeological site of Kryegjata B is located on the most northern part of the valley of the village of Kryegjatё. It was identified during a field survey carried out in the year 1998. The first archaeological excavations were carried out in the year 2000, aiming to explain the stratiography and evaluate the archaeological potential of the site, useful to further studies. Therefore, around the area which revealed a high density of artefacts collection, 6 test trenches, of a 1 m2 surface were excavated. Trench 1 was located on the north of the excavated area. The excavation uncovered the Ap1 and Ap2 disturbed layers. Below it was revealed a thick undisturbed layer B. Trench 2 was situated to the south of the area and its excavation was complicated due to the pre-existing intrusions. The A horizon appeared to have been cut by an earthen path. The transition under the A horizon was relatively thick (BA and Bt1, CUs 8 to 13), and was followed by a very hard clay layer Bt2. Most of the artifacts came from layer Bt1. Trench 3 was located on the edge of the olive field, and it was dug in order to test deposits situated on this side of the road. This trench revealed a series of mixed horizons (Ap1, Ap2, Ap3, Ap4, CUs 002 – 013), which contained a few artifacts, including the most diagnostic find of the entire excavation: a retouched Upper Paleolithic blade. Under the disturbed A horizon was a less disturbed A 5 followed by EB and Bt1. At the last excavated levels (CU20 in Bt1), at a depth of 80 cm, were recovered a few artifacts. Starting from the level Ap1, and continuing into the less disturbed A5 as far as CU 016, was distinguished a tree disturbance like a dark stain occupying the center of the trench but not the profile. Trench 4 was located approximately 1 m to the south of trench 3, slightly further from the road. Horizons A 1 and A2 were disturbed, whereas A3 horizons appeared to be less disturbed (CUs 008 – 010), with a few artifact presence, which became more common in the BA and Bt1 horizons. Trench 5 was located 3 m to the east of trench 4. The Ap (CUs 002 – 007) surface layer covered the less disturbed A horizon (CUs 008 – 009 and 005), and revealed some cultural material remains. The following transitional layer AB and Bt1, contained a number of flint flakes. During the excavation of the trench 006 were revealed the remains of a human skull fragment, which according to some initial assessment seems to date to a later period of time. The excavations of this season were unable to identify a stable prehistoric layer, with artifacts in situ, although the presence of a Middle Paleolithic layer is noticeable in all the excavated levels.
