Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN PLOVDIV (Ivo Topalilov – i_topalilov@abv.bg, Marina Koleva) The site is situated just below the cliff of Dzhambaz Tepe Hill. An area of 170 sq. m was explored, revealing the remains of the Chalakovo School, built in 1851 and demolished in 1867. Remains of a house from the Revival period were explored. The probable remains of the Bozhigrobski Cloister, dated from the second half of the 18th century to 1847, when it was destroyed, were discovered. Five burned clay layers of buildings, constructed of dried bricks and dated to the Ottoman period, were discovered. Remains of a Late Mediaeval building, most probably a chapel, and 19 synchronous Christian graves, located to the south of it, were explored. The foundation of the chapel was built of uneven stones bonded with clay. The chapel was destroyed by fire. The graves were not well arranged and some of them are overlapping. Remains of wooden coffin were found in one grave. Some burial pits were faced with Roman bricks and stones. The deceased were covered with tiles in some graves. The arms of the deceased were crossed on their chest or pelvis, or were stretched along the body. Most burials lack grave goods. The finds in the burials, which have grave goods, include bronze earrings and coins that were placed on the tongue of the deceased and served as Charon’s obols. The cemetery dates to the 13th – 14th centuries.
