Summary (English)

  • APOLLONIA (Krastina Panaiotova – kpanayotova@abv.bg, Margarit Damyanov, Teodora Bogdanova) The exploration of Pit No. 27 continued. It contained sherds from the Archaic, Classical and Roman (2nd century AD) periods. Animal bones, shells, Hellenistic sherds and architectural fragments were discovered between Trenches J2 and K2. Architectural fragments, fragmentary building ceramics and sherds from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity were found to the southeast of the apse of the Early Christian basilica. The foundation of a transverse wall in the Early Classical temple was documented in the Central Sector. The finds discovered there included pieces of slag, marble architectural fragments, animal bones, sherds of the Archaic period, including from amphorae of Klazomenai, Chios, Lesbos and Miletos, a Corinthian oinochoe and an aryballos. The finds discovered at the southwestern corner of the Archaic temple included sherds of 600 – 550 BC, a terracotta figurine of a dove, animal bones, two fragments from the frieze of the temple showing a scene with walking foot soldiers and part of the figure of a horseman. The frieze showed a battle between infantry and cavalry and dated to c. 500 BC. A fragment from a red-brown-gloss terracotta plate with an Ionic cymation, originating from the roof decoration of a building in the temenos and dated to 550 – 525 BC, was found in Grave No. 90. Five Late Antique graves were excavated. A pregnant woman was buried in Grave No. 90 and a glass bead was discovered beneath her skull. The finds from the excavations included bronze coins of Apollonia, lead weights, a bronze belt buckle showing a lion and a plate from another bronze belt buckle, both dated to the 9th – 10th centuries AD.
