Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS ON ST. CYRICUS ISLAND (Krastina Panaiotova – kpanayotova@abv.bg, Margarit Damyanov, Teodora Bogdanova, Daniela Stoyanova) Structures from the earliest period of Apollonia (end of the 7th – 6th centuries BC) were thoroughly explored. The excavations in Room No. 1, 5 m by 5 m in size, continued. Part of the floor was leveled with a pad of fragmentary slag. A knife and an axe with bone handles were found. The pottery dated to the first half of the 6th century BC. Room No. 6 was documented at 5 m to the east from Room No. 1. Occupation traces from the earliest Archaic settlement of the end of the 7th century BC were documented over almost the entire area of the island. Several sunken-floored buildings (probably houses) with plinths of stones and walls constructed of sun-dried bricks were documented. Two Archaic phases were specified within the 6th century BC. The houses with plinths of stones situated along the street belonged to the second Archaic phase. The area was reorganized after 500 BC when the Archaic temple and the altar were built. The next building activities on the island were related to the construction of the Hellenistic temple and later on, the building of the Early Christian basilica. The presumable corner of a building was documented in the northwestern part of the site, with the same orientation as the two temples. Seven Late Antique Christian graves (Nos. 66 – 72) were explored in different parts of the island.
