Summary (English)

  • ST. CYRICUS ISLAND (Krastina Panaiotova – kpanayotova@abv.bg, Teodora Bogdanova) The explorations continued to the northeast from the basilica. A bothros was documented, containing fragmentary cups, dishes, dinoi, olpai, lamps, a Corinthian pyxis, three Corinthian aryballoi, a Corinthian zoomorphic aryballos, three alabastra, East Greek cups, kylikes, Ionic dishes and a bronze vessel, dated to 625 – 500 BC. A wall of a room of the Archaic period was discovered and fragments from Archaic terracotta lamps and an oinochoe of the Fikeloura Style of 550 BC were found. The finds from the excavations included sherds from Attic black- and red-figure pottery, terracotta figurines (including of Rhea, Cybele, Hera and Kore), fragments from architectural decoration (astragaloi, Ionic cymation, anthemion of palmettes and loti) of altars, bronze arrowheads, arrowheads-coins, coins and two Early Byzantine bronze exagia. Christian burials Nos. 73 – 77 and 79 were explored in the Early Byzantine necropolis. A bronze belt buckle of the second half of the 5th – beginning of the 6th century AD was found in Grave No. 77. A silver earring, glass beads, a bronze ring and two bronze bracelets of the second half of the 5th – beginning of the 6th century AD were found in Grave No. 79. Bones from lambs and juvenile goats were discovered in Graves Nos. 73, 76 and 77. Grave No. 78 of the Late Middle Ages was explored. The deceased was laid in a wooden coffin and iron nails from the coffin were found. Bronze buttons were discovered on the chest of the deceased.
