Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF BANYA (Bogdan Athanassov – bo.atana@nbu.bg, Iliya Kulov) Piles of burned clay, probably originating from the upper part of Wall No. 2, were discovered in Trenches I58, К59 and Н57. Wall No. 2 was constructed during Phase 1 and surrounded the hill. The explorations in Trench K58 showed that the wall probably had only an outer face and its function was to support the terrace. The northern wall of apse Building 1 of Phase 2 was discovered in Trench L58. The pottery dated to the transition period between the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Age (12th – 11th centuries BC). The C14 dates from the site indicated that part of the pottery probably dated to the end of the 13th century BC. Special attention deserves the typical Late Bronze Age pottery shapes (mainly kantharoi) decorated with cannelures typical of the Early Iron Age.
