Summary (English)

  • In the period 21.06.-15.07.2014. archaeological research was carried out at the Carine site in Risan. Location Carine Sector in Risan is located on a triangular plateau at the foot of Gradina Hill. It is surrounded by the sea on the west side, by the river Spil to the southeast and the slopes of the hill towards the north.
At the location of the Carine Sector VI / 2014, wich dimension are 7 × 49 meters, and its northwest-southeast orientation, are loceted 10 squares. Nine squares were set up in the southeastern part of the Sector (squares 1-8 are 3.50 × 5 meters in size, while square 9 size is 7 × 4.6 × 8.40 meters-conditioned by the configuration of the terrain). Square 10, ( 2 × 2 meters, was set at the northern corner of the Sector to see the architecture discovered at that site in 2002 and to connect with this year’s site, which represents the extension of this architectural ensemble.
At the depths of 1.50 – 1.60 meters, in square 1-9, there is an ancient architecture, as well as a layer of the recent concrete channel dug into the ancient layer. Square 10 encircled the architectural elements (regular stone slaps) at a depth of 1.26 meters, which confirmed the findings from 2002, and as a result the work was completed and finished.
After defining the architecture found in squares 1-9, four phases can be noted: Early Hellenistic, Late Hellenistic, Roman period and present day. All of these phases are in the same layer and all architectural remains are oriented east-west. It is important to note that the remains of hypocaust were found in squares 6 and 8. The lower half of pitos, 1 meter in diameter, was found in situ in square 5 at the southwestern profile. The final depth in the sector is 1.85 meters.

The smole findings were found in all squares and began to appear already at a depth of 0.50 meters. In this year’s campaign, a large number of ceramic fragments were found, as well as C findings that form parts of ceramics (lids, bottoms, etc.), coins from Hellenistic and the Roman period, the bronze application of the goddess Izidi, half mortar, wedges.
