Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF BUZOVGRAD (Deyan Rabovyanov – rabovyanov@gmail.com, Nikola Rusev) The explorations in the fortress continued. In the Western Sector the central fortification tower was discovered, 6 m by 8 m in size preserved up 3 m in height. Sectors of the inner fortification wall that adjoined the tower were also excavated. Sectors of the inner and the outer fortification walls situated at 2 m apart were explored. In the Southern Sector the southeastern fortification tower was explored, 5 m by 6 m in size, with walls 70 cm wide. A house of the Early Byzantine period built of sun-dried bricks adjoined the tower. The tower and the house were burned down during the AD 580s. A stratum of the 11th – 12th centuries was discovered to the north of the tower. A Mediaeval church was discovered close to the outer fortification wall. The church measured 6.18 m by 13 m and had a room adjoining its northern side. Its walls were c. 65 cm wide, built of cut stones with a core structure of uneven stones bonded with mortar. The fortress was probably built in the beginning of the 6th century AD and was burned down during the AD 580s. It was reoccupied during the Middle Ages. Strata of the Early Byzantine period and of the 11th – 14th centuries were documented. Traces from occupation of the 1st millennium BC and the 5th century AD were also discovered.
