Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF ANGEL VOIVODA (Zdravko Dimitrov – zdravkodimitrov74@gmail.com) Explorations of the rock-cut sanctuary of the Thracian and Roman periods and the Late Antique fortress were launched. They were situated on a high hill. The sanctuary consisted of rock-cut altars, niches, a tomb and basins for winepressing. The sarcophagus-like rock-cut tomb with a rectangular burial chamber was discovered on the highest rock in the site. Sherds of the Late Bronze Age, the Early Iron Age, the Hellenistic and the Roman periods related to the sanctuary were found during the excavations. The Late Antique fortress covered an area of 0.8 – 0.9 ha. The eastern fortification wall was discovered, preserved up to 2.50 m in height, 2.20 m wide and built of dry ashlars with an emplecton of smaller stones. A Late Antique church built of dry ashlars was discovered in front of the rock-cut tomb. The church was single-naved, c. 15 m long and 8 m wide. The apse was paved with stone slabs and the nave was paved with bricks. The church had three entrances: from the north, south and west. The finds included sherds of the 4th – 5th centuries AD, several bronze coins of the end of the 4th – beginning of the 5th centuries AD, fragments from small glass cups and from glass windows.
