Chronology

  • 499 AD - 600 AD

Season

    • Five small trenches were excavated with an overall area of 42 m2. The orientation of Velika Gradina is closely aligned with the north-south axis. On the western part of the hillside, belonging to a bulwark, three courses of stone with no mortar were detected, two to three meters in preserved length. Clearing up remains of the bulwark revealed the elevation of a wall, the complete length of which was 7.5 meters and the height 0.6 meters, measured from the foundation on the outer side. The maximum width of the wall was 1.2 meters. Trench 1 – A large number of pottery sherds of Byzantine provenience were found. We also noted fragments of a grindstone, a flint and a corroded iron bell. Trench 2 – Among the finds, mediaeval pottery appears sporadically, along with a fragment of a spindle whirl. Trench 3 – This shallow cultural layer with fine gravel inclusions yielded a small number of medieval pottery sherds. Trench 4 - In the northern part of the trench a number of medieval pottery sherds was found.
