Chronology

Season

    • During the 2004 campaign at Volovăţ we conducted works in order to uncover the trajectory of the foundations of the old church dating to the end of the 14th century, situated about 50 m south of the church built by Stephen the Great in 1502. This church plan restoration/reconstruction work is meant to single out the location and configuration of the old church that, as known, defines the emergence and evolution of religious stone architecture, in a triconch plan, in northern Moldavia. The works conducted led to the rediscovery of the trajectory of the old church of Volovăţ. From the very beginning it was noticed that their state of preservation was good, in spite of the fact that over three decades elapsed from the date of the excavations conducted by Al. Artimon. On the same occasion, we noticed some small inconsistencies between the planimetric sketch published by the same author in 1981 and the actual situation in the field, as on that occasion we carefully carried out the raising of the plan of the monument and made the necessary corrections.
