Season

    • This prehistoric settlement was found during the construction of a new gas pipeline between Campochiaro and Sulmona (Snam Retegas). It came to light thanks to the preliminary soundings undertaken along the route of the pipeline and was excavated during the summer of 2004. Three distinct areas of the settlement were excavated (sectors A, B and C), the most substantial structural remains emerging in sector C. In fact, here a “hut bottom” was uncovered, sub-rectangular in shape and measuring 5 x 6 m. Clear traces of the structure remained on the ground, altered by the action of the heat generated by the fire that destroyed it. A moderate number of fragmentary pottery finds were recovered both inside and immediately outside the hut, together with faunal and vegetal remains. The remains of a hearth came to light in what is presumed to be the centre of the hut. In the remaining sectors no substantial evidence was documented as the archaeology had been heavily damaged by post-depositional disturbance. It is of interest that the stratigraphic data which provided a moderate amount of paleo-climactic information.
