Season

    • An archaeological mission from the University of Lyons II directed by Prof. Jean-Marc Moret has been working for a number of seasons on the Schola del Traiano at Ostia Antica (IV, 5, 15-17). The project, carried out in close collaboration with the archaeological Superintendency of Ostia, aims to conduct a systematic study of a specific urban area situated along the decumanus maximus in the strategic district of the Porta Marina. The chosen site, partially investigated during the winter of 1938-39, conserves the remains of at least three successive structures: the Schola di Traiano (2nd- 5th centuries A.D.) a monumental public building probably of a corporate nature, the peristyle Domus (1st- 2nd centuries A.D.) and the Domus of the bucranium (2nd-1st century B.C.) an important example of the domestic architecture of this Roman colony. The project will analyse the standing remains and the structures brought to light in 1938-39, but will also excavate a series of trial trenches which are vital to the understanding of the layout and positioning of the adjoining buildings. The organisation of each campaign will be linked to the development of the various objectives and gradually programmed in order to co-ordinate with what is happening in the field. To begin with priority will be given to the laboratories working on the conservation and documentation of finds from the excavation. According to the established programme a synthesis of our findings will be presented in a comprehensive manner in spring 2007 at an international colloquium organised by the University of Lyons II, Prof. Jean-Marc Moret and the Superintendency of Ostia. On this occasion a display of some of the archaeological material from the excavation is planned, including several walls in the Pompeian second style which are at present under restauration. These events, and the comments raised by them will provide the basis for the definitive publication of our work. (Thomas Morard)
