Chronology

  • 301 BC - 250 BC

Season

    • Rescue excavations took place at San Marco Evangelista (CE) in Campania during the construction of two factories. The investigation revealed a road surface datable to the late 4th-mid 3rd century B.C. The road, investigated for c. 46 m, was in a very good state of preservation and was orientated at 58° N. The excavations identified a series of eight rebuilds of the road surface during a period of a century, on a north-east/south-west alignment, the earliest of which built on the floor of a channel about 80 cm deep. These roads probably represent the remains of an early territorial organisation, of the Oscan-Samnite period, preceding the centuriation of the _Ager_ _Campanus_. The continual remaking of this rural road could indicate that in this period it was important enough to be continually repaired. The presence of patches of later surfaces, probably of Roman date, suggests that following a phase of abandonment, this ancient road once again became part of the rural road network.
