In 2009, after removal of the backfill from the previous campaigns, research concentrated on the excavation of the deposit, present in squares C/I 8/10, with the aim of establishing the stratigraphy and correlating it to that of the excavations carried out in the 1970s directed by Carlo Tozzi. The aim was also to define the processes of sedimentation, the lacunae, erosion phenomenon, and disturbances due to natural causes (cryoturbation, bioturbation etc) or anthropological intervention. The results of such studies may offer, with the continuation of the research, indications regarding the environment and climate in which the deposit formed.
Parallel to the excavation samples were taken of the anthracological and faunal remains to be used mainly for radiometric dating using the AMS method (Accelerated Mass Spectometry). The recovery of the stone artefacts produced by the groups of humans who occupied the cave over the course of time will provide new data and further highlight the various cultural aspects and their evolution during the middle and late Paleolithic phases.
In fact, the excavations in the Grotta La Fabbrica may provide new and important data regarding the Mousterian-Uluzzian-proto-Aurignacian succession, and therefore on the transition between the last Neandertals and the first sapiens-sapiens, which took place in Mediterranean Europe between circa 40,000 and 30,000 years ago.
The 1969-73 excavations, directed by Prof. Carlo Tozzi, involved an area of the layers containing the Mousterian (1), Uluzzian (2) and the proto-Aurignacian (3 and 4) industries that was much reduced by the heavy erosion suffered over time by the deposit. Consequently, the number of stone artefacts and faunal remains recovered was much reduced and insufficient for a detailed analysis of the evolution of the stone-working industry and the fauna.
