AIAC_4321 - Villa Adriana, Palazzo imperiale - 2017General results
The objectives of the 2017 campaign were focused on three points: the full
excavation of the Acuatic Ninfeo/Triclinium (E. LVIII), and two other trenches (23 and
24), that where ment to document the hydraulic structure to which the aforementioned
nympheum necessarily drained.
Trench 22 - Acuatic Ninfeo/Triclinium
Trench 22 comprises the entirety of E. LVIII. At its absidated front, it holds a
ninfeo. The inside of the space, whose pavement can be found around 90-74 cm under
the level of the threshold of the openings that reach it, shapes as a pond coated of Luni
marble. It also uses a series of marble pillars, that are located at its bottom.
Trench 23
Trench 23 is located before the drainage channel so as to document the possible
presence of a central euripus. Nevertheless, no axial hydraulic structure was found: that
central space of the peristyle is thought to be occupied by a viridarium (as it already
happened with the first galey, going West to East).
Trench 24
Thanks to Trench 24 it has been possible to identify a symmetric pond to that
found in Trench 1. Its measurements consist on a width of 2,42 metres and a depth of 88
centimetres. The western wall that closes the channel is partially embedded into the
wall. Made out of incertum, and with a minimum width of 23 cm, it is covered in an
irregular signinum of about 3 cm thick. On the other hand, the wall that marks off the
pond is a 24 cm wide one made out of opus incertum, and coated by some signinum
around 2-3 cm thick. While the signinum found on the walls is blue, that found at its
base has no remains of any coloration.
The interior of the pond is clogged by some rubble, in which there is a large
amount of tiles, masonry and some evidence of the decoration of the entablature. No
fragments of columns have appeared (presumably of brick), which suggests that the
wall surrounding the pond would be a solid one, even though the image that such a
circumstance provides does not cease to be strange.
