AIAC_33 - S. Giuliano, piazza Cav. Annunziata - 2004During construction of a public parking complex under the auspices of the Comune di Sora, preventative soundings were made close to the chapel of S. Giuliano, not far from the ancient remains of the Roman Sora. The church, considered the place of martyrdom of the saint and created under the emperor Antoninus Pius (AD 138 - 161), preserves in the subsoil traces of Roman preexistence. This is found in the neighborhood of the via Sora - Cereatae - Verulae (Ferentium), the large artery which connects the via Latina with the Soran basin, permitting access to Marsica. Walled structures constructed of opus caementum were found, pertinent to a building of the Republican period. The structure, of notable dimensions, was constructed with a carefultechnique and was decorated with colored marbles.(Alessandra Tomassetti)

Giuliano, non lontana dai resti antichi della Sora romana. La chiesa, considerata il luogo del martirio del santo, avvenuto sotto l'imperatore Antonino Pio (138-161 d.C.), conserva nel sottosuolo tracce di preesistenze romane. Essa si trova nei pressi della Via Sora - Cereatae - Verulae (Ferentium), grossa arteria che congiungeva la Via Latina con la conca sorana, permettendo l'accesso alla Marsica. Sono state rinvenute a livello di spiccato di fondazione strutture murarie a sacco costruite in controterra, pertinenti a un edificio di epoca tardo-antica, probabilmente una villa suburbana. Ad Est della struttura è stata inoltre scoperta una vasta e densa area cimiteriale, con tombe anche a deposizioni multiple e di diversa tipologia, sviluppatesi in seguito all'abbandono della villa. La struttura, della quale si riconoscono differenti fasi costruttive, era di notevoli dimensioni, è costruita con una tecnica accurata ed è impreziosita con marmi colorati.
