AIAC_1916 - Proprietà Fornaro, via Vallerano - 2001An important discovery was made just inside the _suburbium_ of Teano, in via Vallerano, on the Fornaro property not far from the railway station. The site is situated along the south-western edge of an ancient road, of which the remains of the original paving of _basoli_ could be seen in several points. During work on the construction of a house a large pit was revealed excavated in the tufa bedrock. This had been filled in antiquity by an enormous dump (circa 200 fragments) of architectural elements in grey tufa, almost entirely derived from the destruction of a single building. They comprised orthostats, squared blocks and elements of Doric trabeation, banded architraves, parts of doors, Ionic volutes, Doric column drums, all of which mixed with chippings and waste material from the reworking of the blocks themselves. It is suggested that these may have belonged to a monumental altar, datable to between the 3rd-2nd century B.C., comparable to similar Sicilian monuments (the altar of Ierone II), as well as terracotta altars ( _arulae_ ) and Italo-Etruscan sarcophagi. The structure may have been part of a sanctuary, unknown today, situated in the vicinity and just outside the urban area, that was destroyed during the course of the 1st century B.C. or, at the latest, of the 1st century A.D.

Lungo l’attuale via Vallerano, corrispondente ad un antico percorso che usciva dalla città a sud e si dirigeva verso il santuario di Fondo Ruozzo sono stati recuperati alcuni tratti del basolato riconosciuto a quote sensibilmente differenti e in crescita verso ovest. In località S. Lieno, lungo l’antica via _ad Suessam_ sono stati eseguiti saggi in corrispondenza del ponte antico: in una lacuna della pavimentazione si sono rivelati una serie di strati di preparazione, che hanno restituito frammenti di ceramica, monete e scorie metalliche che datano gli stessi alla fine del I inizi II d.C.

AIAC_1916 - Proprietà Fornaro, via Vallerano - 2005Nel corso del 2005 si è definitivamente bonificata la fossa di scarico di materiale architettonico ellenistico individuata nel 2001 in località Fornaro. Vi sono stati recuperati ulteriori blocchi di architrave e cornice dorica, a conferma della provenienza da un medesimo monumento smontato e gettato nella fossa, residuata da una probabile attività di cava di pozzolana, in una data antecedente l’inoltrato II sec. d.C.

Un’importante scoperta è avvenuta nell’immediato suburbio di Teano, in via Vallerano, nella proprietà Fornaro, non lontano dalla stazione ferroviaria. Il sito si trova lungo il margine sud-occidentale di un antico percorso viario, del quale si distinguono in più punti resti della pavimentazione originaria in basoli. Durante i lavori per la costruzione di una casa privata, è stata posta in luce una grande fossa scavata nel banco tufaceo, nella quale fu scaricato in età antica un'enorme congerie (circa duecento frammenti) di elementi architettonici in tufo grigio, derivati quasi interamente dalla distruzione di un unico edificio. Si tratta di ortostati, blocchi isodomi ed elementi di trabeazione dorica, architravi a fasce, elementi d’anta, volute ioniche, rocchi di colonna di ordine dorico, il tutto in parte misto a scaglie e scarti di rilavorazione degli stessi blocchi.
Si ipotizza che possa trattarsi di un altare monumentale, databile tra il III ed il II secolo a.C., da confrontarsi con simili monumenti sicelioti (altare di Ierone II), nonché con arule fittili e con i sarcofagi etrusco-italici. Esso potrebbe essere appartenuto ad un santuario, ad oggi ignoto, posto nelle vicinanze ed immediatamente fuori dell’area urbana, andato distrutto nel corso del I secolo a.C. o, al più tardi, del I secolo d.C.

Three excavations were undertaken of ancient roads that were affected by the modern road network. Along the present via Vallerano, corresponding to an ancient road that left the town to the south and led towards the sanctuary of Fondo Ruozzo, several tracts of basalt paving were recovered. They were at noticeably different heights which rose towards the west.
In the locality of S. Lieno, along the ancient road ad Suessam, trenches were dug in correspondence with the ancient bridge. In a hole in the paving a series of make ups were revealed which contained pottery fragments, coins and metalworking waste which dated the layers to the end of the 1st-beginning of the 2nd century A.D. - Summary Author

Nel corso del 2005 si è definitivamente bonificata la fossa di scarico di materiale architettonico ellenistico individuata nel 2001 in località Fornaro.
