AIAC_136 - Fregellae - 2004Il sito di Fregelle è ben noto dalle fonti storiche, come città romana repubblicana distrutta nel tardo I secolo a.C. Essa è stata indagata tramite scavi in aree precise scelte in base alla scoperta sia di edifici pubblici, sia privati. La ricognizione geofisica e topografica condotta per questo progetto è stata concepita per fornire un più ampio quadro del sito da integrare con i precedenti rinvenimenti. I risultati finora sono stati promettenti, avendo individuato il foro, il comizio e la curia (già in parte conosciuti dallo scavo), come edifici che circondano il foro e che si trovano verso l’area in cui si è pensato fossero situate le mura della città. Future indagini saranno finalizzate ad ampliare la conoscenza della pianta e dell’organizzazione della città.

AIAC_136 - Fregellae - 2005Two seasons of archaeological survey, integrating geophysical and topographical techniques, were undertaken focussing on the area around the forum at _Fregellae_ at the invitation of Professor Filippo Coarelli. This integrated survey has proved invaluable in understanding and interpreting the nature of the archaeological remains despite the problems of the natural geology and the insubstantial character of the structures. It is also clear that the distinctive local topography constrained the layout of the city. The central ridge provided the axis for the via Latina and acted as a focus for public buildings including the forum and comitium. The magnetometer survey provided a reasonably clear depiction of the plans of both public and private buildings. Different depths of deposit that have accumulated on different parts of the site may obscure some ancient buildings but there are also likely to have been differences in preservation. As the magnetometer survey did successfully identify structures on the steep slopes of the western part of the plateau we are encouraged about its potential for the large scale mapping of the city.

- en The site at Fregellae is well known from historical sources, as a Roman Republican town destroyed in the late 1st century BC. It has been investigated through excavation in certain areas, resulting in the discovery of both public and private buildings. The geophysical and topographical survey carried out for this project, was designed to provide a broader picture of the site, to be integrated with previous findings. The results so far have been good, showing the forum, comitium and curia (already known in part through excavation), as well as buildings surrounding the forum, and towards the area where the town wall is thought to have existed. Future work will aim to extend this knowledge of the layout and organization of the Roman town.

Due stagioni di ricognizione integrate con tecniche geofisiche e topografiche sono state focalizzate nell’area intorno al _forum_ di _Fregellae_ su invito del prof. Filippo Coarelli. Tale ricognizione integrata si è dimostrata preziosa nella comprensione e interpretazione della natura dei resti archeologici nonostante i problemi posti dalla geologia locale e dal carattere poco consistente delle strutture. E’ altrettanto chiaro che la particolare topografia locale ha influenzato la pianta della città. La cresta centrale ha fornito l’asse della via Latina e ha funzionato come _focus_ per gli edifici pubblici inclusi il _forum_ e il _comitium_.
La ricognizione magnetometrica ha fornito una rappresentazione sufficientemente chiara delle piante di edifici pubblici e privati. Vari spessori di deposito che si sono accumulati in parti differenti del sito possono oscurare alcuni edifici antichi ma è anche probabile che diversi siano i livelli di conservazione. Poiché la ricognizione magnetometrica ha identificato con successo strutture sul ripido pendio della parte occidentale del pianoro, siamo stati incoraggiati a valorizzarne il potenziale nella realizzazione della mappatura generale della città.
