AIAC_5358 - Fortified center of Cerje - 2020In the fortified center of Cerje in 2021, the project "Sushica Valley: City, Temples, Churches" in addition to the intensive survey, the partial archaeological excavation of the ruins of an ancient dwelling on the western terraces of the city, within the fortification walls, was carried out. The occupation was spread over several terraces. The plan showed several rooms located around a courtyard or corridor. Four rooms of the apartment and the courtyard were excavated. The material found during the archaeological excavations consists of tiles from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, as well as materials from the medieval period up to the 17th century. Based on archaeological material and construction techniques, the dwelling is thought to have been built in the Hellenistic period, used in the early Roman period and reused in the Middle Ages until the 17th century when it was abandoned. The dwelling is comparable to the dwellings of the ancient center of Borshi on the Ionian coast.

- en The fortified center of Cerje is located in Southwest Albania in the Vlora Region. In antiquity, Cerja was part of the territory of Koinon or the state of the Amantines and was one of the fortified settlements. Before this site there were only a few studies of the fortifications of the Hellenistic and Late Antique periods in the 1970s. The new project "Sushica Valley: City, Temples, Churches" resumed archaeological research in this ancient center in 2020, with an intensive survey inside and outside the fortified area. During the field research, in addition to the survey of the fortification phases, a number of structures and dwellings from the Hellenistic period and Late Antiquity were also identified. These were surveyed and integrated into the plan using GPS for georeferencing in the GIS system, and a new plan is in process via trimble gps. Outside the fortification, about 8 previously unknown dwellings were discovered, as well as the ruins of a church whose chronology is still unknown.
