Summary
- This survey project aimed to investigate settlement patterns in the hinterland of the ancient city of Herakleia (modern Policoro) in a territory South-East of Santa Maria d’Anglona. The survey allowed reconstructing the development of the settlement organization from prehistory to the Medieval period. The research focus, however, was on assessing changes in settlement patterns and land use strategies from the Iron Age to the Hellenistic period.

- A systematic and intensive field survey was carried out by teams of field-walkers spaced 10 meters apart. In 2012 a territory of 2.1 sq km was fully covered: in total 62 “unità topografiche” and 29 “siti” were recorded corresponding to surface concentrations of archaeological material. The team adopted a grid system of 5x5 meters to collect and record the position of artifacts within the surface concentrations (infra-site survey). All archaeological material was counted but only diagnostic material was collected. The survey teams registered also off-site material. The visibility factor possibly affecting the results was also noticed and registered in the form of a visibility map.
