Summary (English)

  • This was the first season of investigations in the cemetery of the medieval church of Sant’Agostino in Caravate (VA). The excavations are part of a multi-year project set up by Varese University to analyse the osteological remains from several medieval cemeteries in the area north of Varese. The excavations were concentrated north of the church, built in the early 11th century, and characterised by a small cemetery on the terraces that were investigated in 1989 and in 2002. This season’s excavation carried on from the previous ones and was situated at the base of an artificial scarp bordering the garden to the rear of the church.

The removal of the surface levelling layers revealed a wall made of large stones abutting the terrain, in correspondence with the north section. It represents the northern edge of the cemetery terrace already partially identified in 2002 and also functioned as a support for another raised level. The terrace’s original ground level was identified south of this wall. There were four reclamation ditches cut into this surface, characterised by the presence of abundant human disarticulated bone. In one of the ditches there was an earth grave containing a juvenile individual. Four burials in stone coffins were found underneath the ditches, datable to the late medieval period. Only two were investigated; they contained the skeletal remains of juveniles between 7 and 15 years of age.
