  • An undertaking of the Pontine Region Project, a part of the larger Regional Pathways to Complexity (RPC) Project, this survey aimed to assess sites belonging to a hypothetical colonial system of Roman Republican villas, and to then map the Republican villa landscape in the immediate neighborhood of the Roman colonies of Cora, Norba and Sezze.

Other Comments

  • Was colluviation responsible for decreasing the visibility of archaeological remains in the plains? What was the effect of Roman Republican period colonisers on the Archaic settlement pattern? When did the exploitation and settlement of the Lepine footslopes begin? Was there continuity or a gap in the Post-Archaic settlement history? Was the indigenous population moved away to make room for the new settlers, or did they take on certain Latin/Roman habits? How did the villa system expand from initial settlement areas around the colonies to eventually fill the landscape?
